This year I participated, for the first time, in the Kidney Walk at the Wrightsville Bridge in Columbia, PA on Sunday, May 3, 2009. The walk was three miles long. The National Kidney Foundation’s Kidney Walk is a non-competitive, fundraising walk focusing on education and prevention of kidney and urinary tract diseases, and awareness of the need for organ donation.
I was diagnosed with Diabetes in 1969 at 18 months old. After 30 years of living with diabetes, I had kidney failure in 1999. I went through two years of hemodialysis treatments, three times a week, for three and a half hours each treatment. In 2001, I received a kidney and pancreas transplant. The story of my kidney failure and my transplant are available in the Battle With Diabetes section of this web site.
As a person who has had kidney failure and a transplant, I want to raise money for research and education so future generation are able to avoid and prevent what I have dealt with.
Thank you to everyone who supported me this year. I did not reach my goal this year. Due to problems with my ankle, I was unable to put the time in I wanted to and needed to for this event. My ankle should be better by next year. Now that I know about where and when the event takes place, I will be better prepared next year. |
