| When I was 18 months old, I was recovering from a case of strep throat. I was not
as active as normal, but my Mom attributed that to my still recovering from the strep throat. I was not eating much. I soon became very
hungry and thirsty. My Mom thought this was a good sign that I had finally recovered from the strep throat. One
day I asked for a glass of water. When my Mom handed it to me, I could not see it to grab it. She knew
something was wrong and rushed me to the doctor's office. By the time she reached the doctors office, I had
already lapsed into a coma. I was rushed to the hospital. The
doctors did not know what was wrong with me. My family did not have a history of Diabetes, so the doctors did not consider checking for Diabetes. It was 1969. At that time the hospitals in that area had never had a case of Diabetes in
someone that young. On the second or third day of the coma, a resident suggested that they test for Diabetes. Once they did, they were able to bring me out of the coma on the fourth or fifth day. I was released from the
hospital after 19 days and started my lifelong journey with this disease. |
